Julian and his mother, 33-year-old Shatayvia Alisha Calderón, were found dead inside their Indianapolis home Monday afternoon in what police believe was a murder-suicide.
According to investigators, Shatayvia is suspected of shooting her son before taking her own life at the Village at Eagle Creek Condominiums on the city’s northwest side. Police are still investigating, and no motive has been confirmed.
Looking at these pictures makes this story even more heartbreaking. A mother and son sharing happy moments together, with no indication of the tragedy that would eventually take both their lives.
We don’t know what Shatayvia may have been going through, and we won’t speculate. But this tragedy should remind us how important mental health, family support, and recognizing when someone needs help really are.
We can have compassion for a mother who lost her life while still acknowledging that Julian was an innocent child who deserved to grow up, experience life, and have a future.
Our hearts go out to their family and everyone who knew and loved them. Please check on your people, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when life becomes overwhelming.
