A teenager is dead following a brutal confrontation on Indianapolis’ northeast side, and the man accused of attacking him is now behind bars.
According to FOX59, 27-year-old Trey Clardy has been arrested and accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Charles Dupree, 18, following a violent altercation outside a laundromat near 38th Street and Mitthoefer Road.
Investigators say Dupree was punched and pushed to the ground during the confrontation, suffering a devastating injury that severed his spinal cord. He died at the hospital just 35 minutes later.
Even more heartbreaking, police say Dupree’s father witnessed the attack and told investigators that Clardy assaulted both him and his son.
According to court documents cited by FOX59, one witness claimed that after the attack, Clardy walked away yelling, “I hope (he) dies.”
Police tracked down Clardy approximately one week later outside a shoe store on East 10th Street, where SWAT officers reportedly used less-lethal beanbag rounds to take him into custody.
The circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear. Clardy is accused of involuntary manslaughter and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
An 18-year-old has lost his life, a family is grieving, and another reminder of how quickly an argument or physical confrontation can turn deadly has shaken the community.
