Indiana school attendance improves, but high school absences remain a concern

Indiana schools are seeing attendance improve, but the high school numbers still deserve attention.

Indiana Capital Chronicle reports that 30% of seniors missed at least 10% of the 2025–26 school year, equivalent to 18 days.

The statewide chronic absenteeism rate fell for a fourth straight year to just under 15%.

Both excused and unexcused absences count, so the numbers should not be treated as proof that every student was skipping school.

What support would help more students show up and stay engaged?
