Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., the former No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge following a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana.
According to FOX59/CBS4, officers pulled Richardson over on October 12 near Springmill Boulevard and Silver Stream Drive after discovering that the registration on his black 2023 Dodge Charger had expired and was reportedly assigned to another vehicle.
Police say they smelled marijuana approaching the vehicle.
According to court documents, Richardson admitted he had smoked marijuana inside the car because he didn’t want to smoke in front of his children.
Officers subsequently searched the Charger and reported finding a small mason jar containing suspected marijuana and an opened package of THC-infused gummies. Richardson was handcuffed during the search, and prosecutors filed a misdemeanor possession charge on October 19.
The case raises questions beyond football. Marijuana remains illegal in Indiana despite legalization in neighboring states, and Richardson has now found himself making headlines for something entirely unrelated to his performance on the field.
Is this much ado about nothing, or should a professional athlete know better than to put himself in this position?
