FEMA application deadline arrives for residents in 24 Indiana counties

Black Indy LIVE’s October 25 post outlines the FEMA assistance deadline, eligible Indiana counties and application options.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT for thousands of Hoosiers still recovering from August’s devastating storms, tornadoes and historic flooding.

Today is the FINAL DAY for eligible Indiana homeowners and renters to apply for federal disaster assistance through FEMA.

Residents in 24 Indiana counties, including Marion County (Indianapolis) and Lake County (Gary), may qualify for help covering disaster-related losses that insurance did not fully cover.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, approximately $154 MILLION in FEMA Individual Assistance had been paid or allocated as of October 23, with more than 35,900 approved applications.

The assistance may help qualifying residents pay for essential home repairs, temporary rental housing, damaged personal property and other necessary disaster-related expenses.

The eligible counties are Carroll, Cass, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Pike, Porter, Pulaski, Putnam, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union and Wayne.

HOW TO APPLY BEFORE TONIGHT’S DEADLINE:

Apply through FEMA’s official Disaster Assistance website or call 1-800-621-3362. Residents can also obtain assistance at designated in-person recovery events listed by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

You do not have to own your home to apply. Renters who experienced eligible losses may also qualify. Assistance is based on individual eligibility and is not guaranteed.

FEMA inspectors may contact applicants from unfamiliar telephone numbers, but official inspectors carry identification and never charge for inspections. Be aware of potential scams.

If your home flooded, your belongings were damaged, or you were displaced during the August storms, don’t automatically assume you are ineligible because you have insurance or rent your home. FEMA may help with qualifying uninsured or underinsured expenses.

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH ANYONE IN INDIANAPOLIS, GARY OR OTHER AFFECTED INDIANA COMMUNITIES WHO MAY STILL NEED HELP.

Did your family experience damage during August’s flooding? Have you received disaster assistance, or are you still struggling with repairs, insurance claims or temporary housing?
